Guidelines For Artist Requests/Submissions
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR ARTIST REQUESTS AND ARTWORK SUBMISSIONS:
Guidelines for Artist Requests:
- The artist you request must have work spanning several decades. Please don’t request contemporary artists who started their career in the 90s or 00s. Artworks made during or before 2005 will be posted, but that does not mean that contemporary art is the focus of this blog - please make sure the artist you request is historically significant and has produced enough art to cover several decades. If you want to check out contemporary art blogs, I’d suggest looking in the “art” tag on tumblr, as there are many excellent artists featured daily.
- Make sure the artist is historically significant. This basically means that there must be some historical connection to the artist, whether it’s through studies of their works by art historians or multiple museum exhibitions. Basically, don’t submit artwork by your Great Uncle Fred. Your whole family might have loved his art, but that’s no use if no one else had ever heard of him.
- Check and make sure the artist has not been featured recently. I get a lot of repeat artist requests, so if you’re requesting a popular artist, there’s a good chance that they’ve already been featured recently. If you ask for an artist that has already been the artist of the day less than a week or two ago, your request will be ignored.
- Please request only ONE artist per message. This helps me keep things organized when I feature artists. If you throw 10 artists into one ask, I won’t be able to publish it.
Guidelines for artwork submissions:
- The piece of art being submitted must have been made before or 2005. Again, this is not a contemporary art blog - if it was, it wouldn’t have the “history” part in the name. Please don’t submit contemporary artworks.
- The artist of the piece you submit must follow the “artist request” guidelines. Pretty self-explanatory and leads into guideline 3, which is:
- Do not submit personal art. This blog is meant to focus on art history from historically significant artists, not your personal work, even if you are the next Picasso. If you want suggestions of blogs that will accept personal artwork submissions, please message me.
- Include the title of the piece, the artist, and the date. This is pretty self-explanatory. These three things are the only thing I require to post submissions, but if you want to add more information such as where the artwork resides, dimensions, or personal commentary, feel free to include that as well.
- Please use as high resolution images as possible. It’s not fun to squint at the computer screen to try and make out a picture - when you’re finding the image of the artwork you want to submit, try and find as big an image as possible, and at least 400x400 or more pixels.
- Check back a few pages/in the archive and make sure the artwork you’re submitting hasn’t already been posted. There are a host of popular artists/images that people submit fairly regularly. Check the archive or look back in the blog to make sure the artwork you’re submitting hasn’t been posted recently.
That’s it! I know it’s a lot, but follow those guidelines and your artist request will be featured, and your artwork submission will be posted. If your request or submission does not follow the above guidelines, it will not be posted and you won’t get a nice ask from me explaining why.
