Carl Andre, 144 Pieces of Magnesium, 1968

In this piece that Andre termed a “modular piece,” the artist has created a sculpture that you can walk on, subverting the idea of sculpture on a pedestal raised up above the viewer. The sculpture displaces the flow through the gallery space, activating the viewer as a participant; how do you move around this piece? Thinking about that question, consciously or subconsciously, engages the viewer in the piece in a way that was radically new and different for the time. This piece also highlights the architecture and space in the gallery; it commands the space above it, while also making the viewer think about how the architecture of the walls, lights, and floor interact with the piece itself.
