Mel Bochner, Measurement, 1969

In this piece, Bochner measured the empty gallery and marked off the numbers with tape. This piece is an institutional critique of the gallery itself as a social system and a cultural construction. Bochner was interested in what happens when you remove the traditional elements of the gallery, that is, the artworks, and reduce the space only to simple measurements and numbers. How does the viewer’s reaction to the space change when interacting with this piece vs. more traditional artworks?
