In this piece, Morris took industrial waste scraps and arranged them into seemingly random arrangements; these felt pieces are attached to the wall and gravity appears to be pulling them down. The important aspect of this piece and others like it is the notion of the artist’s choice, choosing how to arrange the pieces of felt - how high to hang them, how far into the gallery space they extend, and other formal elements. Called a deductive structure because the viewer can figure out the artist’s process, these pieces emphasize the hand of the artist over other formal elements.
