Tony SmithFor Dolores, also called Flores para los muertos (Flowers for the Dead), ca.1973-75

From the Nasher Sculpture Center:

Tony Smith’s interest in scientific principles of growth and form led to the study of cellular and molecular structure, translated in many of his paintings into rounded shapes and lateral linkages. In the early seventies, diagrams of so-called Fermi surfaces- three dimensional surfaces representing the motion and energy of electrons in metal that were developed by the great Italian physicist Enrico Fermi- inspired a series of maquettes resulting in two marble sculptures, For Dolores and Fermi (for the latter, see Tony Smith, The Pace Gallery, New York, 1983, pp. 24-25; now in a private collection, California). Both call to mind molecular chains. Smith in 1975 said of this group:

"There are studies already carved, or now being carved, in Carrara marble at Pietrasanta [by the firm of Sicea Marmi]. These are derived from Fermi surfaces, and although conforming to modular grids, their aspects are more voluptuous than those of previous work. These pieces are intended for indoors…They are, therefore, of domestic size."
