This image of St. Francis receiving the stigmata continues Giotto’s use of complex poses - Francis’ body is twisted as rays of light shoot out from his wounds. The cave in the background emphasizes the ascetic nature of Francis; he renounced all his worldly possessions to devote himself to his religious life. Giotto has a tendency to reduce images; he gets rid of extraneous details and only includes the necessary elements to effectively communicate the story of Francis receiving the stigmata.
