David Salle, We’ll Shake the Bag, 1980

In this work, Salle uses layering to create a sense of unease. He takes a movie still of a woman smoking in bed and layers it underneath an image of children bobbing for apples: the former is erotic, while the latter is totally innocent. The diptych format and altered colors add to the disjunction that overwhelms the piece.
